Hakuba sits at the foot of the Northern Alps, and its famously light snow is at its deepest in January and February. This journey is about the quiet slopes beyond the resort, enjoyed fully and safely.

01The first gondola of the day
The morning after fresh snow, we aim for the first gondola and slopes no one has touched yet. The village has several resorts, each with its own character: Happo-one, Goryu, Tsugaike and more. We choose where to go by the day’s snow and wind.
02Backcountry, always with a guide
Off-piste slopes come with avalanche risk. On an Aoi Neko journey an experienced mountain guide comes with you and decides where to ski from the day’s snow conditions. Before setting out we go through the beacon, probe and shovel together.
03Then, the hot springs
Nothing warms you after a cold day like the village’s own hot springs. Reliving the best run of the day from an outdoor bath in the snow is something special. In the evening: Shinshu produce and Japanese sake in one of the village’s restaurants.
