At around 1,500 m, cradled by the Hotaka range, Kamikochi is at its most beautiful in the quiet hours, before the day visitors arrive and after they leave. Here is how we spend three unhurried days there, walking to the rhythm of the mountains.
01Kappa Bridge and Taisho Pond at dawn
A day in Kamikochi is won early, before the first buses arrive. Mist lifts off the Azusa River and the Hotaka ridgeline slowly appears behind it. Walking the boardwalk along the river from Kappa Bridge to Taisho Pond in that silence may be the greatest luxury of the trip.
02Myojin Pond, then on to Tokusawa
The path from Kappa Bridge to Myojin and Tokusawa is almost flat, comfortable even for those new to the mountains. Myojin Pond, home to the inner shrine of Hotaka Jinja, lies still as a mirror. A rest on the meadow at Tokusawa, perhaps with the lodge’s soft-serve ice cream, is Kamikochi at its best.
03On to Karasawa, if the season and your legs allow
With time and energy to spare, you can go further with a mountain guide, up to the Karasawa cirque. In autumn, usually from late September to early October, the whole bowl turns red and gold. Your guide sets a pace that suits you, watching the weather and how you feel.
04Night in the valley
Once the day visitors have gone, Kamikochi is astonishingly quiet. Dinner at a classic mountain hotel, then a sky full of stars outside. You fall asleep wondering about tomorrow’s weather, as you only do in the mountains.
